What to Wear for Light and Airy Family Photos
What to Wear for Family Pictures | Light and Airy Family Photo Outfit Ideas
One of the questions I hear most often when families are preparing for their photo session is, “What should we wear?”
Choosing outfits for family photos can feel overwhelming, especially when you are trying to coordinate multiple people, personalities, and styles. The good news? You don't have to perfectly match to create beautiful, timeless images.
For this sweet summer family session, this family chose a soft palette of blues with beautiful variations in texture and tone. Each outfit complemented the others without everyone wearing the exact same thing. The result was a look that felt coordinated, natural, and perfectly suited for their light and airy family photos.
As an Eastern Iowa family photographer, I always encourage families to choose outfits that not only photograph beautifully but also feel like them. The goal is to create timeless images that allow your family's connection and personalities to shine.
Start with a Soft, Coordinated Color Palette
For light and airy family photos, I recommend choosing colors that complement one another rather than everyone wearing the exact same color.
Soft blues were the perfect choice for this summer session. Blue can photograph beautifully outdoors and creates a calm, timeless look that works especially well against the greens, soft summer light, and natural scenery of an Iowa landscape.
Instead of choosing identical shades, this family incorporated different tones of blue throughout their outfits. This created dimension while still allowing the entire family to look beautifully coordinated.
Some beautiful colors to consider for a light and airy family session include:
- Soft blue
- Dusty blue
- Light denim
- Cream
- Ivory
- Beige
- Soft gray
- Blush
- Sage green
- Muted lavender
The key is to choose a few colors that work well together and build each family member's outfit around that palette.
Coordinate Without Perfectly Matching
Gone are the days when everyone needs to wear the same white shirt and jeans.
Coordinating your family outfits allows everyone to look connected while still letting individual personalities shine through. For this session, the family chose different shades and styles of blue, creating a cohesive look without appearing overly matched.
Think of your family's outfits as one complete picture.
Choose two to four complementary colors, then mix those colors throughout everyone's outfits. You might choose a soft blue dress for mom, a coordinating blue shirt for dad, and lighter or darker variations of blue for the children.
Adding neutral colors such as cream, ivory, tan, or light denim can also help balance the overall look.
When choosing your outfits, try laying everything out together on a bed or floor before your session. This makes it much easier to see how the colors, patterns, and textures work together.
Don't Be Afraid to Mix Textures
One of my favorite things about this family's outfits was the variety of texture.
Texture adds depth and visual interest to photographs without becoming distracting. Instead of everyone wearing the same fabric or style, consider mixing a few different textures throughout your family's wardrobe.
Beautiful textures for family photos include:
Flowy dresses
Linen
Soft knits
Denim
Subtle embroidery
Ruffles
Eyelet fabric
Lightweight button-up shirts
For a summer family session, lighter fabrics also create beautiful movement. A flowing dress can catch a soft summer breeze, while linen and lightweight fabrics help create an effortless, relaxed look.
These small details add dimension to your images while keeping the focus exactly where it should be—on your family and the connection you share.
Choose an Outfit You Love First, Mom. Moms are often the ones planning the entire family photo session, so I always recommend starting with your outfit first. Choose something that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable, and confident
For light and airy photography, dresses and skirts can photograph especially beautifully because they add softness and movement to your images. Flowy fabrics, soft colors, and subtle textures can all complement the light and airy style. Once you have chosen your outfit, you can begin coordinating the rest of the family around it.
For example, if you choose a soft blue dress, dad might wear a neutral shirt or a coordinating blue, while the kids can wear lighter or darker tones that pull the entire look together.
Starting with one outfit you truly love can make the rest of the planning process feel much easier.
Outfit Ideas for Dad and the Kids. For dads, I recommend keeping things simple and comfortable. A neutral or soft-colored button-up shirt, polo, or well-fitted shirt can photograph beautifully without taking attention away from the rest of the family.
Consider colors such as:
Soft blue
Light gray
Cream
Tan
Muted green
Light denim
For children, choose outfits that allow them to move, play, and be themselves. Dresses, rompers, suspenders, soft button-ups, and comfortable neutral pieces can all photograph beautifully.
Most importantly, avoid choosing something so uncomfortable that your child spends the entire session asking to change! The best family photos happen when everyone feels comfortable enough to laugh, play, snuggle, and enjoy being together.
Colors to Avoid for Light and Airy Family Photos
While there are no strict rules when it comes to choosing your family's outfits, some colors and patterns can be more distracting in photographs.
For a soft, light and airy look, I recommend limiting:
Neon colors
Extremely bright colors
Large logos
Busy graphics
Very bold patterns
Everyone wearing the exact same color
Too much solid black
These choices can sometimes pull attention away from the connection and emotion in your photos.
That doesn't mean your family needs to wear only neutral colors! Adding soft blues, muted greens, dusty pinks, or other gentle tones can bring personality into your images while still creating a timeless, cohesive look.
